Sri Lanka

From per person

If there is one place on earth to find yourself immersed in the local vibrant culture, it's Sri Lanka. The best taste of culture can be had at Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle that encompasses historic sites such as Sigiriya, Anuradapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and the hill capital Kandy where ancient artifacts and historic sites are rife. Also, take pleasure in experiencing the warmth of traditional Sri Lankan life by sitting down to an authentic village-cooked meal or sipping a cup of tea by a roadside shop, or even enjoying the colorful 'peraheras'- the Buddhist temple parades that you will not witness anywhere else in the world. Cultural diversity is what makes Sri Lanka truly unique.

It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka.
The “Sri Dalada Maligawa” or “The Temple of The Tooth” is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest attractions situated in this city. The Sacred Tooth Relic (Dālada) of the Buddha is the most venerated object of worship for Buddhists. The ‘Esala Perahera’ in Kandy is celebrated to honor the Sacred Tooth Relic and its four ‘guardian’ Gods. This ritual is performed by carrying the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha through the streets of the Kandy city and is conducted with exceptional panache. The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days while various festivities can be witnessed right throughout this season. The Sinhalese term ‘perahera’ means a parade of musicians, dancers, singers, acrobats and various other performers accompanied by a large number of caparisoned Tuskers and Elephants parading the streets in celebration of a religious event.

It was made the capital of the island when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire in 1815 and its status as capital was retained when the nation became independent in 1948. The city is a mish mash of colonial style buildings, commercial high rises, hotels and of course the glorious ocean front known as ‘Galle Face Green.’ Some of the finest structures built during the colonial times are still preserved in a part of the city known as ‘The Fort.’ Among the top sites to visit whilst in Colombo are Independence Square, Galle Face Hotel (which is the country’s oldest hotel built in 1868) and the adjoining Galle Face Green, The Fort, the bustling streets of Pettah, Town Hall and the Parliament building in Kotte.
